Poke is a prime spring vegetable and wildlife planting, but like the Terrasol, they are so aggressive they might not be advisable for most gardens. There is too much to say about poke to fit in a single post, the whole plant is very toxic, except the the early spring greens (which need to be cooked), but as with all things the dose makes the poison, so poke is also used in very small amounts by some herbalists. Those beautiful racemes of purple-black berries hold into winter and are a favorite food of migratory birds. Once there is some snow these flicks of birds leave fuchsia poo splatters all around the poke patch, which brings to mind another human use, ink made from the berry juice! Think long about planting, eating or using poke as medicine, but in the right context this native plant can be incredible.

Scarify the seed with sandpaper or by poking with a pin, soak seeds in room temperature water for 24 hrs before sowing in spring. Starting in containers or direct sowing are both options.

Pokeweed is a extremely aggressive and dispersive, so consider carefully before planting, especially in areas out of thier native range. Will grow in most conditions. Weediness can be controlled by deadheading flowers before fruit set. Not recommended outside of native range (see map in photos).
