1 seedling plant, 3”-8” tall.

Maple Leaf Viburnum (V. acerifolium)

Seed packet contains 1/2 tsp seed, about 25 seeds.

A small native understory shrub, with pretty white flowers early in in spring followed by black fruits and often stunning bright purple fall foliage (although this is dependent on fall weather). Seeds are tricky to germinate and typically double dormant. Sow whenever, mark carefully and don’t expect seedlings for 2 years. This page has more info.

These are local ecotype seeds grown at Edgewood Nursery, original stock came from a population here that predates the nursery.

Cramp Bark Viburnum (Viburnum opulus)

Note: this species has two common varieties, one native, one not. It is unclear which one this is.

Medium size shrub, grows easily on most well drained soils in sun to part shade. Produces lots of bright red fruit, which is human edible, once cooked and sweetened. Sometimes called “High-Bush Cranberry” which i think greatly oversells the fruit. Fruit is great winter food for birds though!

Arrowwood Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum)

This native shrub grows easily on any well drained soil in full to partial sun. With white flowers in spring and blue fruit in late summer they make a nice landscape shrub. The fruit is edible, but the pulp to seed ratio is so small most people leave it for the birds, which makes this a great option for a wildlife planting. The more small fruit you plant for the birds, the less pressure there will be on the small fruit you want to eat.
