House Plants: Climbing Onion (Bowiea volubilis) / Silver Squill (Ledebouria socialis) / Tube-Leaf Jade (Crassula ovata) Plants
Warning: these species are frost sensitive, if your mail experiences freezing temperatures, please wait until a little later in spring to order.
Climbing Onion (Bowiea volubilis) - 1 ping-pong ball sized bulb. Despite the common name, this species is not edible.
I received this funky house plant from my Aunt a bunch of years ago, they naturally produce offset bulbs, so every few years i have some extras to sell. This bulb is frost sensitive and makes a very cool houseplant. I pot them in normal potting soil and leave the top 1/2 of the bulb exposed, which is a interesting feature, then a profusion of narrow, leafless vines will emerge and climb over the surrounding area, usually followed by small flowers. Occasionally the vines go dormant and you can ignore them for a couple of months to give them a little rest period. Once you start watering again new vines emerge from the bulb.
Silver Squill (Ledebouria socialis) - Small clump of bulbs. Dark green leaves with silvery variegation. Does well in medium indoor light. Creates offsets at a moderate rate.
Tube-Leaf Jade (Crassula ovata) - Different leaf form of the classic house plant. Might grow a little slower and stay a little smaller. Prefers bright indoor light, but does fine in medium.
