Meadow Garlic (Allium canadense) Topsets
Packet contains 1 tsp of topset bulbils, 20+ bulbils
These are local ecotype bulbils grown at Edgewood Nursery, original stock came from the banks of the Kennebec River
This native Allium is probably most similar to Chives as they are small and grow in a bunching habit. Instead of true flowers these ones tend to produce topset bulbils which often have a jewel like quality and are very pretty. The whole plant is edible and the topsets lack a papery layer making them easier to use as food then similar topsets from Walking Onions or Garlic. Meadow Garlic is somewhat ephemeral, so don’t be surprised if they disappear in the heat of summer, they will be back next spring. This species grows wild in open forests, meadows and flood plains and seems to do best with ample spring moisture, they do fine in drier soils, but may go dormant quicker and establish slower.
