Mouse Garlic (Allium angulosum) / Elephant Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum) Seed Packet or Plant

from $3.00

Mouse Garlic (Allium angulosum)

Seed: packet contains 1/5tsp, ~80 seeds. Limited seed available in 2022.

Plant: A small clump of plants

A great choice for a perennial allium, larger and more robust then chives/garlic
chives, with a milder flavor. Very low maintenance. Beautiful purple flowers,
which are of course, edible. This species is closely related to A. nutans and they may have cross pollinated.

Seeds should be planted in spring. Starting indoors is nice as alliums can be a bit slow to establish and are easy to lose if direct sown. Barely cover seeds.

Mouse garlic is easily grown in full sun in most soil conditions, will tolerate pt. Shade, weak soil and weed competition. Single plants grow into tight clumps in 1-2 seasons, from there they can be easily divided to expand the patch or share with friends. Makes a very nice edimental garden border.

Elephant Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum)

One order is 2 bulbs/cloves.

Elephant Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum) is technically a leek, but the segmented bulb is like a giant Garlic with somewhat milder flavor. This variety gets HUGE, often larger then my fist if given enough room, water and fertility. They are also quite pretty with large pale purple flowers that can be dried for winter flower arrangements. They also tend to hang on to a piece of the flower bud, like a cute little hat. Grows in full sun to part shade. Can be grown as a annual or perennial. Can be propagated by dividing bulbs, bulb offsets or true seed (which may cross with other leeks creating new varieties).
