Perennial Wheat 'Salish Blue' (×Tritipyrum aaseae) Seed Packet

$3.50

Seed packet contains 1 TBS, ~400 Seeds.

‘Salish Blue’ is a perennial Wheat hybrid (Triticum spp x Thinopyrum intermedium) developed by Washington State University’s Bread Lab around 2017. This variety is very interesting and has huge potential for breeding work, although i’m not sure if they are a fully developed staple crop at this point. My planting set a small amount of seed in year 1 and showed strong regrowth and winter hardiness through a -30f cold snap. In July of year 2 some started ripening, but most wasn’t even close to ready. I decided to harvest what was ready and keep them separated as they had distinct differences. The earlier ripening stuff tended to be shorter (and less likely to lodge) and had a lot more plants with awns. The second cut ripened 2-3 weeks later and was almost entirely awnless. Both seem similar in production and grain size. First cut threshed out slightly easier. Both will be available as separate packets. I’ll be interested in watching these plants over the next few years to see low long they live, if they remain productive etc etc. My 25’ x 2’ bed with 2 rows yielded 1.5lbs clean seed. Also worth mentioning, this was the wettest season here in decades and these plants performed very well, no noticeable disease issues, lodging was a issue but not too big a deal. Regrowth after year 2 was much less, it is unclear if the plants are going through a dormant cycle or if they are dying off. I would love grow reports on this variety!

Direct sow seeds in early spring about 1/4” deep and 2”-4” apart in rows 12”-18” apart… or try a different pattern!
