Self-Heal (Prunella vulgaris var lanceolata) Plants
This plant is common across much of the northern hemisphere and often overlooked. They are edible, medicinal, beautiful, adaptable and low-maintenance in the garden, what more could you ask for? The leaves aren’t particularly flavorful, but make a good addition to salads. Something I appreciate from a garden stand point is that they spread by rhizome to form a nice ground cover, but each plant hits a maximum size and slows down, so they don’t spread indefinitely. Here they self-sow, but only moderately, in damper conditions they would probably spread faster and might be more rambunctious. I think these are the local ecotype (or at least var lanceolata), around here you can find both plants whose ancestors have likely been here for thousands of years and more recently arrived Eurasian varieties, although they are all the same species.
