Great St. John's Wort (Hypericum ascyron) and St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) Seed packets
Great St. John's Wort (Hypericum ascyron)
A packet contains 1/5 teaspoon of seed, ~ 3200 seeds
These are local ecotype seeds grown at Edgewood Nursery, the original seed stock came from a population in NH.
This native St. John’s Wort species looks a lot like the more common weedy species, but giant, instead of blooms 1/2-3/4” across they are 2-3” and the plants stand 3-5’ tall. Very ornamental and easy to grow in any medium to damp soil in full sun to part shade. Sow on the surface outdoors in fall or winter or provide 60+ days cold damp stratification. Hardy to zone 3.
Common St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
A packet contains 1/5 teaspoon of seed, ~640 seeds. 2020 germination test results 62%
Pretty yellow blooms on a medium sized perennial herb that can alternately crawl or stand tall. Used medicinally both internally and externally. Use internally with caution if using any medications, for some reason this plant interacts with a huge number of medicines. Externally the partly-dried flowers are often infused in oil, which turns a pretty amazing shade of red. The species name perforatum refers to the little "holes" you can see in the leaves of this species if you hold them up to light, they are actually oil glands. Can be dispersive by seed, so harvesting all the flowers or deadheading plants is recommended, do not abandon. Hardy to zone 4.
No seed sales to CA, CO, MT, SD, WA .
Does best in full sun and well draining soil. Prefers weak soil. Surface sow. Can be a erratic germinator, germinates best in bright light.
