Variegated Wintercress (Barbarea vulgaris) Seed Packet

$3.50

Packet contains >550 seeds.

These plants are one of the earliest greens in the garden (hence the common name), but their bitterness makes them a minor edible for me. They are best eaten mixed with other cooked greens or treated like their cousin Creasy Greens. Aside from their edibility, they are very pretty plants and are a great early season forage for beneficial insects, especially Syrphid flies. To top it all off they are a dead-end trap crop for Diamondback Moth (Plutella xylostella) and some other lepodopteran pests of Brassicas, this means they are attractive to egg laying adults, but the larvae that hatch on these plants are quickly killed by chemical defenses of the plant and cannot complete their life cycle. Barbarea vulgaris is widely naturalized in (so called) North America and considered weedy in some places, luckily, this variegated form is less vigorous and very easy to indentify and control if they spreads too much, even so, I would not plant them anywhere that you can not keep a eye on their spread.

Seeds should be sown in fall or winter or artificially cold stratified for 30+ days before sowing. Seeds should be surface sown, as they are quite small. Starting in pots is probably preferable due to small seed size, but these plants are quick to start and tough as nails, so direct sowing is also a option.
