Woad (Istatis tinctoria) Seed Packet

from $3.00

A packet contains about 40 seeds. Bulk packet contains about 320 seeds.

Woad is a European dye plant yielding a blue dye and rumored to be the source of blue Celtic war paint. Other human uses are a food (leaves cooked in several changes of water) and medicine, both are uncommon and fairly minor. As a early blooming Brassica, Woad has some value for pollinators, especially syrphid flies.

Soak seeds in room temp water for 24 hrs then sow 1/4” deep. Direct sowing and starting in containers both work well.

Woad grows easily in full sun to part shade in most soil types. Leaves for dye production are harvested at the end of year one. Plants bloom and produce seeds in year two. If self-seedling is not desired, deadheading as flowers fade is advisable. Because of possible weed potential, do not abandon.
