Wood Nettle (Laportea canadensis) a native nettle to this region, they can often be found in damp woods or along waterways. Stings and has non-stinging hairs. Leaves are edible and tasty. Used in a similar manner to the common Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica). Spreads by rhizome but less quickly and less far the Stinging Nettle. Wood nettle comes out later then Stinging Nettle and produces larger leaves, so if you already grow Stinging Nettle, you may want Wood Nettle as well. Prefers damp soils in part-shade, but fairly adaptable. Sow 1/8” deep in fall or winter, or stratify 60+ days.
