Common Milkweed (Asclepius syriaca) isn’t just food for Monarchs, they also host several other species of host specific insects and are human edible at several life stages (gotta cook them though!). Not to mention the beautiful flowers and fragrance. A very resilient plant once established, they grow in full sun to part shade in dry to medium soils. Tolerates drought, weak soil, and most other issues. They do tend to spread by rhizome, so don’t plant with delicate companion plants. Spread in easy to keep in check by harvesting. My favorite part to harvest is the spring shoots, which i find to be more tender and flavorful then Asparagus, but generally similar. I could probably go on for pages singing the praises of milkweed, but just one more tidbit, Milkweed hosts some specialist aphids that sometimes cause the Milkweed plants to looks kinda rough, but this is often a good thing for your garden overall. Why? Because I have often observed high populations of Aphid predators on these plants. This means that the Milkweed aphids are helping to sustain and grow the population of Aphid predators, but because these Aphids are host specific, they are very unlikely to spread to other garden plants.
